Purpose of Job

Lead the team(s) for which you are responsible to effectively and efficiently deliver what matters to the people of Gwynedd by creating and maintaining an environment of respect and trust, empowering, equipping, and inspiring the staff.

 

Responsibility for Resources

Museums and Arts Service Staff, Service Budgets, Museum Collections, Service Equipment and Buildings.

 

Main Duties

 

Leading

  • Be accountable for the Service and for making the most effective and efficient use of the resources available.
  • Lead the Service’s staff by encouraging and motivating them to adopt the principles of Ffordd Gwynedd and be responsible for ensuring that happens.
  • Ensure an environment within the team that promotes and encourages staff wellbeing.
  • Support the team to establish operating principles, taking into account relevant legislation and ensure compliance.
  • Be aware of how the team’s systems work and facilitate challenging them where necessary.
  • Ensure that the team contributes to the aims of other services or organisations that seek to achieve what matters to the people of Gwynedd.
  • Promote the need to identify and act on future threats and opportunities, including preventative steps.
  • Ensure awareness of the legal and political climate affecting the service.
  • Be alert to good practice within the service field and ensure that the team considers the suitability of that practice.
  • Lead change within the service area where needed.
  • Deal with concerns raised by Elected Members about the Service.

 

Enabling and Empowering

  • Recruit and develop individuals and teams to ensure they have the necessary skills to carry out roles now and in the future.
  • Equip the team to establish what is important to the people of Gwynedd and maintain the team’s purpose.
  • Ensure that decisions are made on the basis of evidence.
  • Help the team to review and challenge its performance.
  • Create and maintain an atmosphere that enables every team member to contribute and take decisions.
  • Ensure an atmosphere of trust and accountability within the team through appropriate communication.

Specific Areas of the Post

  • Lead the Museums and Arts Service in all its aspects – budgets, staff, work programmes and priorities.
  • Lead and supervise the work of Storiel, the Lloyd George Museum, the Community Arts Unit and Visual Arts.
  • Collect, document, safeguard, conserve and provide access to museum collections in partnership with relevant organisations.
  • Lead on developing a programme of exhibitions and cultural activities within the county’s museums.
  • Create community awareness of Storiel, the Lloyd George Museum and Gwynedd’s culture.
  • Ensure good professional practice and maintain Museum Accreditation standards.
  • Provide advice and support to other departments and external agencies where appropriate.
  • Provide advice to researchers and respond to enquiries.
  • Work with education and engagement officers to deliver programmes across Gwynedd.
  • Supervise exhibition programmes in the Service’s galleries.
  • Prepare grant applications and manage related projects.
  • Maintain relationships with the Friends of Storiel, Friends of the Lloyd George Museum and the Storiel Support Foundation.
  • Work with the Community Arts Officer to allocate arts grants and support projects.
  • Coordinate the work programme connected with the Arts Plan and Culture Plan.
  • Promote public use of and awareness of the Arts and Gwynedd’s culture.
  • Lead collaborative forums and projects within the sector.
  • Research and prepare reports and represent the Service on working groups.
  • Represent the Service with external agencies.
  • Contribute to the county’s marketing and publicity programme.
  • Be responsible for Health and Safety decisions within the Service.
  • Ensure the Service’s emergency plan is current and effective.
  • Act as a contact point for other cultural sites within the Manager’s budget responsibility.
  • Carry out additional management tasks as requested by the Head of Department or Assistant Head.

 

Special Circumstances

  • The need to work occasionally at night and on weekends.
  • Full and clean driving licence and use of a car.
